For many years, I wondered if a book for homeschoolers was needed for Biblical Classical Education because there hasn’t been one available. Then I considered how there are books for homeschoolers on other forms of education—Classical, Christian Classical, Traditional, Charlotte Mason, etc. Therefore, I decided it was time for me to write the book series that has been on my heart for several years. So, after spending 20+ years homeschooling with Biblical Classical Education, I’ve written a book on it to serve the Christian homeschool community.

Biblical Classical Education Defined

“Biblical-Classical Education,the Principle Approach®(1), America’s historic method of Biblical reasoning, places the Truth of God’s Word at the heart of education in every subject.”(2)

That’s a basic definition, and it explains that the two terms for this education are interchangeable. However, its big picture and specific methods set it apart from other Classical forms—which are Greek-rooted forms. Additionally, the mission of the Principle Approach® is specific:

Restoring education to the Bible
Family discipleship (in the homeschool lifestyle)
Teaching a character of liberty that sustains and promotes liberty for the individual and nations

Simply claiming Biblical Classical Education doesn’t make a brand or resource truly so.

Borrowing the Term

While there might be some overlap between Christian Classical and Biblical Classical philosophies, their methods differ. If there’s a Christian Classical product, service, or group copying the term Biblical Classical, know they are incorrectly copying the term. It’s misleading and causes confusion.

A Thoroughly Christian Education

The Principle Approach® is a thoroughly Christian education in its educational triad of philosophy, method, and content. Individuals who have been trained by The Principle Approach® founders or through The Foundation for American Christian Education can be trusted to offer genuine Biblical Classical resources. To help protect the authenticity of Principle Approach® Education, The Foundation for American Christian Education (i.e. FACE) now offers a teaching training certification program. This is essential when it comes to schools or brands offering Principle Approach®-rooted resources.

It’s my aim to help protect its authenticity as well.

That isn’t to say that potential Principle Approach® schools and brands that want to be rooted in it can’t be inspired by my work—or that of other trained individuals—but it isn’t a replacement for certification through FACE, and it has never been advertised as such.

FACE primarily focuses on Principle Approach® schools and Principle Approach® homeschool hybrid-schools. So far, my state, hasn’t had very many homeschoolers interested in the Principle Approach®. Therefore, my efforts continue to be largely geared toward helping with the restoration of education to the Bible through the broader Christian homeschool community. That being said, there’s some hope on the horizon for Oregon as interest is being show by some established homeschool groups. Please pray about this! As Principle Approach® Oregonians, our family is responsible with helping our state with these efforts.

Biblical Classical Homeschooling Parents

Christian parents who want to teach biblical thinking and reasoning to their children choose the Principle Approach® for discipleship in life and learning. While the desire is there, they need mentoring and support. That’s why The Biblical Classical Homeschool Circle™ membership, and The Biblical Classical Homeschool Experience,™ and Biblical Classical Mastermind™ (by invitation only) memberships and communities exist. Conclusion

Biblical Classical Education is spreading among the Christian Homeschool community! Be aware that just because you see this philosophy and method claimed, and just because someone who isn’t certified in it or has years of experience practicing it, doesn’t mean that it’s genuinely represented or implemented.

The Principle Approach® isn’t just a “curriculum” to teach. It’s a transformative philosophy and method because it’s discipleship through education that renews or minds biblically in the academic disciplines and all of life.
